Roaming with Verizon: Everything You Need to Know

If you are planning a long-distance trip anytime soon, you will probably be wondering about your cell phone carrier and roaming charges.

If you are with Verizon, you will be wondering if it is worth it to pay for those roaming charges.

What do you need to know about roaming with Verizon? On all nationwide Verizon plans, domestic wireless roaming is free. You can pay additional fees if you plan on taking your phone on international travel within your policy, or a per-minute basis.

No idea how roaming works? I made this comprehensive guide about what roaming is and how it works. It is worth the read – promised!

Because there is not a lot of available information about roaming with Verizon available on the Internet, I created this article to help you out as you plan to travel.

When you know your destination and your phone plan, you will be able to tell if using your Verizon phone while roaming is worth it.

Table of Contents

Verizon coverage areas

First, we need to know about Verizon’s coverage area.

Most mobile carriers, like Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile, share a map of where they provide coverage on their websites.

Those maps demonstrate the mobile network that users can utilize when they call or use data.

You can view the map of Verizon’s coverage in the US and the International coverage as well.

You may want to check them out every now and then, as they get updated frequently.

Verizon domestic roaming charges

If you are planning a domestic trip with Verizon, then you are in luck.

With Verizon, all domestic wireless roaming is free as long as you have a regular or prepaid nationwide Verizon Plan.

You can connect to any non-Verizon network that is in the country, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands, and it will not cost you anything extra.

Your roaming minutes come off your plan just as if they were regular Verizon minutes.

For example, say your prepaid or regular plan gives you 600 minutes per month of use while you are in the country.

When you are roaming domestically, you still have access to the same 600 minutes at the same price.

You will not lose or gain any minutes or pay anything extra simply because you are roaming domestically.

Do note that you cannot simply connect to another provider’s network for the sake of it.

Domestic roaming will work when Verizon has no coverage in the said area.

Trying to connect to another network when you are in a Verizon covered area will result in errors when trying.

Verizon international roaming charges

International roaming charges will depend on the type of Verizon plan you have signed up for and are using. If you have a Verizon plan that does not offer service outside of the United States, then you will be charged additional fees while traveling abroad. That means you will be charged on a per-minute, per-text, and per-megabyte (MB) basis when you go abroad.

If you are not careful about your cell phone use while you travel abroad, things can add up quickly.

You need to be aware that Verizon will charge you for all of your phone activity while you are overseas, which includes calling, texting, and data usage.

When you are using your phone overseas, you will get text alerts from Verizon breaking down the various charges. They will also send a text when you are at a usage threshold.

If you are using your phone a lot while abroad and racking up high charges, then Verizon might wind up limiting your cell phone service.

Verizon international roaming minutes

When you are traveling and using your Verizon phone, international roaming minutes will be billed as separate minutes.

International roaming minutes are charged apart from the minutes you get on your national plan, and international minutes are much more expensive than national ones.

However, Verizon gives you some options that will save you money and make using your phone while traveling abroad still very affordable.

If you have a 4G-World capable device, you can sign up for Verizon TravelPass. The TravelPass lets you use your usual domestic minutes, data allowance, and texts in 196 destinations for $10 per day.

If you are going to Canada or Mexico, you will be charged $5 per day instead.

Additionally, you will only need to worry about paying the $5 per day or $10 per day amount for the specific days you use your phone.

If you do not use your phone on certain days, then you do not pay for those days – you only pay for the TravelPass if you use it.

Verizon global voice, messaging, and data rates

International roaming rates with Verizon can still vary drastically depending on your plan.

That is also true of global voice rates. If you want to learn more about how global prices can vary with Verizon when you are roaming, take a look at Verizon’s pricing by the country chart.

That chart will give you the current rates for any destination you might be visiting.

Global messaging rates with Verizon for roaming cost $0.50 per text message sent and $0.05 per text message received. Additionally, you will be charged $0.25 for both incoming and outgoing multimedia messages (MMS).

Global data rates cost $0.002/KB ($2.05/MB) for data usage in the destination where you can data roam. Verizon Prepaid roaming rates are a bit different from those who are on a Verizon plan.

It will cost you $0.69 per minute while roaming with Verizon Prepaid, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Those on Verizon Prepaid will pay $0.50 per message sent and $0.05 per message received.

Again, these rates include roaming in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Verizon roaming plan choices for traveling

When traveling abroad, the way Verizon will charge you for the use of your phone can vary.

You have a few options for international plans with Verizon that can help keep costs down.

Verizon’s international plans make it cost-effective for people to use their phones in 196 destinations outside the United States.

Verizon TravelPass

The TravelPass is one of Verizon’ international plan options.

With TravelPass, you can use your wireless phone like you do when you are at home. TravelPass allows you to pay a flat, daily rate to take your domestic plan’s talk, text, and data options with you. With TravelPass, you only pay when you use your phone that day. The cost ranges from $5 or $10 per day.

To add TravelPass, text Travel to 4004 or by going here.

Verizon Monthly International Plan

The Monthly International Plan is another option provided by Verizon The plan lets you set a monthly allowance of talk, text, and data to your account when you travel abroad.

You can set up your monthly international plan to expire after a month or let it renew until you do not need it anymore.

Verizon Pay As You Go Roaming

Your last option when traveling abroad is to use Verizon’s Pay As You Go option. If you do not plan on using your phone that much while you are traveling, then roaming on Pay As You Go rates could be an option for you. However, if you know you will need your phone often, this might wind up costing you a lot more money.

With the Pay As You Go plan, you can call for $0.99 per minute when traveling in Canada, Mexico & Guam (zone 1). In 130+ destinations (zone 2), it will cost $1.79 per minute to talk on your phone. In 80+ other destinations (zone 3), the cost to call is $2.99 per minute.

Zone 1 Zone 2 Zone 3
Talk $0.99 $1.79 $2.99

Texting and data costs the same on the Pay As You Go Plan no matter where you travel. Texts cost $0.50 to send and $0.05 to receive. Multimedia messages cost $0.25 for both sending and receiving them. Data costs $2.05 per MB.

If you would like more information about international travel rates, check out Verizon’s international travel page here.

A few notes about international roaming with Verizon

You are not required to use a TravelPass or the Monthly Travel Plan to use your phone while traveling. However, it could save you a lot of money if you do.

If you are traveling to Canada or Mexico, you may not need an international plan.

Some of Verizon’s domestic plans cover talk, text, and data while you travel through Canada and Mexico. Calls from the US to Canada and Mexico are typically included in your Verizon Plan.

However, you have to confirm that on your own.

If you have Verizon’s Above Unlimited Plan, you can get 5 TravelPasses to use each month.

All you need to do to activate your TravelPass is add it to your line.

There are a few limitations when it comes to using TravelPass and Verizon’s Monthly International Plan.

You will not be able to use either plan in destinations that are not covered on Verizon’s list, airplanes, or cruise ships.

Ontario at night

Using a Verizon TravelPass

If you want to add TravelPass to your line, it is easy. All you need to do is text Travel to 4004 on your Verizon line that you want to use.

After you have used your 5 included TravelPasses, you will be charged $10 per day to use TravelPass while you are traveling abroad.

You can also add TravelPass or a Monthly International Plan in a few different ways. You could use My Verizon online.

After you log in, go to Plan. After that, select Manage Plan, and choose International Options.

You could also use the My Verizon app to make the change. To do that, open the menu in the top left. Select Account and then pick My Plan.

If you have got more than one number on the account, choose a number from the My Devices dropdown section. Then, select International, which you should see at the top of the screen.

Do note that you may wind up with slower data speeds when using your Verizon phone on a travel plan.

You will get high-speed data for the initial 0.5/GB per day of use. You will get 2G reduced speeds after that usage.

If you plan on traveling for an extended period, you may want to call and check with Verizon about their limitations.

If you use more than 50% of your talk, text, or data usage in 60 days in Canada or Mexico, you might wind up getting the use of those services removed or limited.

Other important notes about roaming with Verizon

There are a few additional essential notes we need to cover about using Verizon.

First, if you are not sure if there is network coverage for your particular travel destination, then you should check out Verizon’s international coverage map to help you plan.

Calling to the United States from abroad with Verizon

If you need to call the United States while traveling internationally, you need to enter + first, then add the US country code, 1, and then the 10-digit phone number.

If you cannot find the + press and hold 0 on the keypad of your phone and the + option will eventually appear on your screen.

A perhaps faster way of dialing a US number is to use 001 instead of +1. They do the same thing.

Roaming on airplanes with Verizon

You can roam on select airlines and planes with Verizon. Verizon has partnered up with AeroMobile, which offers in-flight roaming facilities.

Sadly, there is no list of on what airlines you can roam with your, but I can tell you that you will be charged $2.99/min, $0.50/message sent, and $0.05/message received, and $2.05/MB.

Roaming on cruise ships with Verizon

If you are traveling abroad and taking a cruise ship, you will have limited use of your Verizon phone. You can make and receive calls as well as send text messages when on a cruise ship. However, you cannot use your data plan while you are on a cruise ship.

When on cruise ships, you will pay Verizon Cruise Ship Pay as You Go rates, which are $2.99/min, $0.50/message sent, and $0.05/message received.

You can roam on the following cruise lines:

  • Azamara Cruises
  • Carnival
  • Celebration Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Crystal Cruises
  • Cunard
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Holland America Line
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines
  • Oceania Cruise Lines
  • Paul Gauguin
  • P&O Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Seabourn
  • Silversea
  • Semester at Sea
  • Tui Cruises
  • Windsta

Roaming on the listed liners is subject to availability.

Verizon WIFI calls when roaming

If you are wondering whether you can use WIFI when you are making phone calls from outside of the United States or not, the answer is yes.

You can use WIFI calling to call the United States while you are traveling internationally at no additional cost.

However, you will have to pay additional charges when WIFI calling to any destination that the United States.

You will be charged at Verizon’s International Long Distance rates regardless of what international plan you are be using.

Changing country signals

If you are traveling near the border of two different countries, your phone will be scanning around to grab onto the strongest signal it can find.

As a result, you might pick up a different country’s network if that signal is stronger.

Verizon will send you a text message once you are roaming on a different country’s network and will inform you about the rates of the said country.

If the two destinations fall under the same zone, then there is nothing you need to worry about, as the pricing will be the same.

If not, then you may want to change your network selection settings from Automatic to Manual so that you do not accidentally connect a network of a different country.

Verizon international travel data usage alerts

If you are worried about keeping track of your spending while using your phone and traveling abroad, there is some good news for you.

You will get an international data spend notification when your charges hit certain thresholds.

Those thresholds are $250, $500, $1,000, and every $1,000 used after that.

If you have a Verizon Business account, you will get notices at different points.

You will be notified when charges hit $500, $1,000 and then each $1,000 you reach after that.

Verizon limits to unbilled data

Do note that you need to be aware that there is a limit to the amount of unbilled data you can use.

When you hit $500 in unbilled data usage, your international travel data will be automatically blocked.

You can remove this restriction easily by calling +1 (908) 559-4899 when abroad.

If you want to check the status of your unbilled voice, text, or data while you are traveling outside of the United States, go to the International Usage and Services page when you are logged into My Verizon.

Then, select the device you want to view. You will see your international travel usage listed under the My Usage area.

What do I do when I am experiencing technical problems with Verizon when traveling?

If you experience a technical problem while you are traveling with your Verizon phone, you can get help by calling +1-908-559-4899.

If you wind up losing your device, it gets stolen or broken, or for any other issues while you are traveling outside of the United States, you can call Verizon’s International Support Team from any landline phone.

If you call from a landline, enter your country’s toll-free number to start getting help.

Then, enter your 10-digit mobile number when asked for it by the International Travel Hotline.

If you do not see a toll-free number listed for the country you are currently traveling through, you will have to call +1-908-559-4899. Additional charges may apply.

Is roaming with Verizon worth It?

You may be wondering, especially after viewing all of our travel plan information, whether or not it is worth it to travel abroad and use your Verizon phone.

If you can take the time to plan out your cell phone usage and trip wisely, I do feel that paying for your Verizon phone is worth it. Of course, if done in moderation.

Since Verizon offers several different options that will help you save on international roaming rates, they do help make traveling and roaming charges affordable – to an extent.

Of course, it will take some planning and effort on your part to take advantage of that.

You have to make sure you activate any international monthly plan before you travel. If you can do that, you can save quite a bit of money compared to Verizon’s Pay As You Go rates.

Man making a phone call

It is seldom that I would recommend roaming on Pay As You Go rates if the provider offers roaming packages like Verizon does because it gets too expensive too quickly.

With a roaming pack, you are at least aware of how much you will be paying when using it.

This makes the TravelPass an attractive roaming option.

With Verizon’s TravelPass, you can pay $5 or $10 per day you roam.

That way, if you use your phone often, you will not get charged for each use. You will only have to worry about that flat, daily rate.

But, there is a catch. Imagine going on a trip to Thailand for 10 days.

You would spend $100 on roaming alone.

In a case like this, you would be better off using a local sim instead your Verizon phone because it will be much cheaper.

Now, if you have a sim-lock device, using a local sim may not be an option because your device will only accept Verizon sim cards.

Contact Verizon to see whether you have a sim-lock device or not.

Man on his phone

You could purchase a travel phone for a few bucks (can be much more depending on the destination you are in) and use that as your roaming phone.

The issue is that if the phone is so cheap, it may not be worth to data roam on it.

You may not even be able to browse the web with it because the phone is not made for that.

You could at least still make voice calls and text if that is important to you.

If you cannot be bothered to get a travel phone, you may be better off not to roam at all.

If you are staying in a $10 destination, you should consider getting a travel sim if you are staying for more than 3 days, as you can get local sims with amazing plans for less than $30 in most cases.

If you are in Canada or Mexico for more than 6 days, a local SIM card may be worth it too.

If you do not want a local SIM card, just stay offline and connect to WIFI hotspots when you can.

This will be the most cost-effective way of roaming when abroad.

Why spend $100 on TravelPasses when you can spend that money on experiences?

In short, roaming with Verizon is worth it if done in moderation. Make sure you explore all your options to select the best plan for you and your travel needs.
