SIM Cards in Angola: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Angola – one of the six Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa together with Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

But that should be the least of your concerns when thinking of visiting this nation because there is a lot to see and do here. Perhaps a fancy dinner in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. maybe explore Parque Nacional do Quicama. Or enjoy the beaches in Lobito – just a few things to quickly mention.

Of course, you could roam internationally while in Angola. However, international roaming is expensive. Travelers had gotten 9000 GBP bills before because they accidentally roamed while abroad (12k USD/10k EUR/8.2 million) – do not become one of them.

Well, you actually do not have to be because local SIM cards, like an Angolan one, are almost always cheaper than roaming internationally or its alternatives. Angola is one of the many countries where getting a local SIM is worth it.

So how much will an Angolan SIM card cost? What about the cost of data?

In Angola, you can get a SIM card for 900 AOA (1.10 USD) in the official stores of Unitel & Movicel. A 2 GB data-only plan will cost you at least 2000 AOA (2.40 USD).

I can tell you that the prices mentioned above are cheap, especially in Africa. Neighboring country Namibia, for example, is much more expensive for some reason.

Not only is mobile data reasonably priced in Angola, but the quality of service is quite decent compared to the rest of the region

Now, there is a lot of things you should know about getting yourself an Angolan SIM card.

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Angola. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Angola?

Everyone living in or visiting Angola can buy an Angolan SIM card from the local operators (Unitel Angola & Movicel) without restrictions.

Do be aware that SIM card registration is mandatory in Angola. Moreover, your phone needs to support the GSM frequencies used in Angola to use your device in the country (regardless of whether you want to buy an Angolan SIM card or roam internationally).

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Angola?

You can get an Angolan SIM card in the official stores of Unitel Angola & Movicel. Unitel Angola also has a store at Luanda International Airport (Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport).

You can expect to pay the following for an Angolan SIM card:

  • Unitel Angola: 900 AOA
  • Movicel: 900 AOA

Can You Use Your Phone in Angola?

Angola uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Angola. However, there is a 99% chance that your phone supports GSM.

Traditional European frequencies are used in Angola, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 & 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).

The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American Frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

ITU Regions Map by Phone Travel Wiz

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 & 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Angola.

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Angola or can only on 2G.

If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Angola.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Angola

Cellular Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

Angola has two mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:

  • Unitel Angola
  • Movicel

Africell Angola is planning on launching its services in the country in late 2021.

The following frequencies are used in Angola:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 1800 MHz (Band 3)

You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.

To check whether your phone will work in Angola, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).

Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).

If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

5G NR in Angola

5G NR Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

5G is not available in Angola as of 2021, and the Angolan government has not made any indications of when they will auction 5G licenses. The current operators are not holding 5G trials either.

Unitel has, however, signed an agreement with Ericsson for 5G-related equipment and supplies. Upcoming newcomer Africell (Angola) has signed a deal with Aviat Networks for a 5G-ready end-to-end disaggregated transmission network.

Best SIM Card in Angola

If you want to buy the best sim card in Angola, I recommend going with Unitel. Unitel has the most extensive coverage throughout Angola and the fastest speeds. Moreover, they are just slightly more expensive than Movicel.

SIM Card Registration in Angola

SIM card registration, with the use of your passport information, is mandatory in Angola. Additionally, your visa details will be checked and recorded. This will all be done at the point of purchase.

Angola Mobile Inter Speeds, Mobile Internet Prices & Insights

Flag of Angola

Mobile data in Africa can be cheap, reasonably priced, or straight-up expensive. And that is from the perspective of an outsider. The locals will almost always say that mobile services are costly in their countries.

The cost of data in Africa is above the global average. However, there are a few countries with ridiculous prices that drive up the average.

So what about Angola? Is mobile data cheap there?

The average price for 1 GB of data in Angola is 1.61 USD, way less than the African average of 5.80 USD. The world average is 4.07 USD.

Although inflation is high in Angola, the mobile operators managed to bring down mobile data costs by 69.6% compared to 2020.

Then again, the local population is experiencing inflation, so they may not really notice this price decrease. But we travelers certainly will.

So what about mobile data speeds? Is the internet slow as in many African nations, or is it fast?

Angola's average mobile download speed is around 22 Mbps, which is less than half the global average. However, Angola is the country with the 7th fastest mobile download speed in Africa.

I do have to say that there is currently no African country with an average download speed faster than the global average. South Africa has the fastest mobile speeds in the continent, averaging around 42 Mbps at the time of writing. Followed by Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon, Kenya & Mauritius.

Speaking of coverage and quality of service, Angola is doing quite well for African standards. Like in most places in Africa, the reception will be good to excellent in the populated areas, while remote areas may be lacking. Do note, however, that coverage in Central and Southeastern Angola may be lacking.

Right now, there is a duopoly in Angola with Unitel and Movicel. Angorascom was given a license to operate in Angola. In 2020, the company reported no progress in terms of its official launch. However, in late December 2019, Angorascom set the launch date for February 2021 (as of May 2021, Angorascom has not launched, and no updates regarding the launch could be found).

Telstar was also given a license in 2019, which was promptly canceled by the president within a week. In 2020, it was reported that Africell was the sole bidder for the 4th telecom license in the country. Africell won the bid and will enter the market in the Angolan near future.

Based on previous experiences, like in Sierra Leone, Africell will most certainly enter the Angolan market with competitive rates and plans to gain market share (early on).

For now, you will have to choose from the two incumbent operators. However, only one is clearly winning the race.

Currency in Angola

Angolan Kwanza
© Banco Nacional de Angola

Angola uses the Angolan Kwanza with the symbol AOA (which will be used throughout this article). However, prices in Angola are listed in Kz. For example, 25 AOA = Kz 25. For reference, below are some exchange rates between AOA and USD (US Dollars – Rounded):

  • 10 AOA = 0.010 USD
  • 100 AOA = 0.10 USD
  • 1000 AOA = 1.20 USD
  • 10 000 AOA = 12.10 USD
  • 100 000 AOA = 120.90 USD

For up-to-date AOA:USD exchange rates, search AOA to USD on Google, or replace USD with the currency you use.

If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.

Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).

Movicel

Movicel, not to be confused with Movitel in Mozambique, is the smaller operator in Angola. Although the smaller operator, and originally stated-owned, it was ahead of Unitel Angola to launch 4G services in the country back in 2012.

Movicel uses the following frequencies:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 1800 MHz (Band 3)

This is what you will learn about Movicel:

Coverage – Movicel

Movicel has good coverage in the populated areas of Angola. Outside of the urban places, the reception will be weak or non-existent.

I do believe the coverage map shown below is not as representative as usual because Unitel Angola has almost quadruple the subscriber numbers than Movicel (and has many more people doing speed tests with the Speedtest app).

However, it does give you an indication of what to expect with Movicel in terms of reception. Speeds will be significantly slower outside of Luanda, Cabinda, Huambo & Lubango.

Below is a coverage map of Movicel produced by Speedtest:
