But besides its warm weather, what else does the Philippines have to offer? A lot.
Of course, you can spend all your time at the beach.
With more than 7100 islands, you will be bound to find a beach to your liking.
You can also visit caves, such as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
Or visit and swim in one of the many volcanos, like Taal Volcano (Taal Lake).
But be sure to pick out a safe volcano… you do not want to burn alive, I hope.
There are many more things you can do in this lovely country.
There are many dedicated Philippines blogs out there that will do a better job promoting the country than I will because… well… I focus on SIM cards 😎.
If you had asked me about Filipino SIM cards a few years ago, I would have told you all of them are bad and expect lousy service throughout your trip.
However, things have significantly improved over the years, especially with the introduction of 5G NR, with the country achieving incredible speeds.
But I am getting ahead of myself – how much do SIM cards cost in the Philippines?
You can get a Filipino SIM card for 40 PHP (0.70 USD) from Smart and Globe and 49 PHP (0.85 USD) from Dito in their stores. The MVNOs (Cherry Prepaid, GOMO, TM & TNT) sell SIM cards for between 29 PHP and 299 PHP (0.50 USD-5.30 USD) from resellers like convenience stores and kiosks. SIM cards are also sold at airports, including Manila – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA/MNL).
Yeah, Filipino SIM cards are affordable and so are many data-featured plans.
While you may be able to achieve download speeds of 200 Mbps in Manila or other big cities, do not expect much on remote islands.
Still, nowadays, you should still have reception in most places in the country – and that is what matters the most to travelers and the local population.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in the Philippines. Let's do this.

What is the Best SIM Card in the Philippines?
If you want to buy the best SIM card in the Philippines, I recommend going with Smart. It has the best coverage and the fastest speeds. Consider GOMO for generous data plans with no expiry. GOMO Data can be exchanged for minutes and SMS.
The Philippines has three mobile operators and four Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:
- Smart Communications Philippines
- Globe Telecommunications Philippines
- Dito Telecommunity
- Cherry Prepaid (Globe Telecommunications Philippines MVNO)
- GOMO Philippines (Globe Telecommunications Philippines MVNO)
- TM Philippines (Globe Telecommunications Philippines MVNO)
- TNT Philippines (Smart Communications Philippines MVNO)
In this guide, I will only stick to the mobile operators and MVNOs bolded above, as they are the most popular options for travelers.
I decided to stop reviewing MVNOs (in most cases) and spend that testing time on travel eSIMs (like the ones for the Philippines, for example) instead because most Phone Travel Wiz readers avoid MVNOs. But if you really want a SIM card from an unbolded option, you have to do the research yourself, I am afraid.
Anyone living in or visiting the Philippines can buy a Filipino SIM card with no real restrictions, but you do have to comply with the Philippines' SIM card registration regulations.
Regarding the registration requirements, you must show your passport at the point of sale.

Where Can You Buy a Filipino SIM Card (+Prices)?
You can get a Filipino SIM card in Smart, Globe & Dito stores. Resellers, like post offices, newsstands & grocery stores, also sell SIM cards. Some Filipino airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).
You can expect to pay the following for Filipino SIM cards:
- Smart Communications Philippines: 40 PHP & 399 PHP
- Globe Telecommunications Philippines: 40 PHP
- Dito Telecommunity: 49 PHP
- GOMO Philippines: 299 PHP (with data)
The following Filipino mobile operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:
- Smart Communications Philippines: 349 PHP, 699 PHP, 999 PHP, 1499 PHP & 1999 PHP (Travel SIM)

Be aware that SIM cards sold at airports can be more expensive than the prices mentioned above.

(Travel) eSIMs for the Philippines
The use of (travel) eSIMs has exploded in recent years.
Not only do more phones have eSIM capability (some US-sold iPhones are eSIM-only), but the number of providers adopting technology has proliferated as well.
This includes local mobile operators offering eSIM and platforms selling eSIMs (travel eSIMs).
If you want a local Filipino eSIM, you can get one from Smart Philippines.
But remember that you have to comply with the Philippines' SIM card registration regulations, even when you get a Filipino eSIM.
If you do not wish to deal with registration for whatever reason, like privacy, consider getting a travel eSIM for the Philippines.

Globe (Telecommunications) Philippines
Globe Telecommunications Philippines, just Globe, is the second-largest mobile operator in the Philippines.
It used to be the biggest until Smart Philippines managed to revamp its network and became (much) better than Globe.
Globe uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28), 850 MHz (Band 5), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2100 MHz (Band 1)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes

Dito (Telecommunity) Philippines
Dito Telecomunity Philippines, just Dito, is the smallest mobile operator in the Philippines.
It launched in March 2021 after winning the third telecommunications bid of 2018.
Before Dito entered the market, Smart and Globe had a duopoly.
In the previous version of this guide, I was antagonistic towards the market in the Philippines because the network performance of both mobile operators was terrible.
But now, the other two mobile operators are doing much better, and so is Dito.
It managed to get more than 7 million subscribers within a year of launching.
And it still needs to launch its services in about 30 provinces (as of May 2022).
Before you consider going with Dito, you need to have a Dito-compatible device.
It needs to support VoLTE to make calls. However, you can try to use a non-compatible device that supports VoLTE with a Dito SIM card.
But that will be at your own risk… if you do not mind wasting 0.95 USD 🤪.
Dito uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: N/A – never had it
- 3G: N/A – never had it
- 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28), 2000 MHz (Band 23), 2100 MHz (Band 1), 2500 MHz (Band 41) & 3300 MHz (Band 52)

But that is because the mobile operator is just over 1-year old… so it did not have the chance to fully develop yet.
Nevertheless, it does have extensive coverage throughout the country.

GOMO is a Globe Telecommunications Philippines MVNO, meaning GOMO uses the Globe Telecommunications Philippines network and does not have its own mobile infrastructure.

SIM Card Price – GOMO Philippines
You can get a GOMO SIM card for 299 PHP with 30 GB (no expiry) from Cherry Prepaid resellers, such as 7-Eleven, Supermarket & The SM Store. SIM cards are not sold at airports, such as Manila – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA/MNL).

GOMO has no eSIMs.
You should consider getting a travel eSIM for the Philippines because they can sometimes be cheaper than getting a SIM card from GOMO.
