The Faroe Islands are a remote island group in the Atlantic Ocean, but they are still part of Europe. Some say they are part of Scandinavia, while others say they are one of the Nordic countries. Either way, it is a cold destination.

Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, has the Tórshavn Cathedral and the lovely Old Town. You can find puffins in Mykines. Wonderful waterfalls can be found all over, such as in Gasadalus, Streymoy, and Vágar. In short, the nature is beautiful in the Faroe Islands.

You probably want to share your Faroese experiences online but know that roaming with your provider can be expensive in many cases. That is why local SIM cards are popular so that you can enjoy local rates.

Although a Faroese SIM card will most likely be cheaper than roaming, mobile data is still somewhat expensive in the Faroe Islands, mainly because they are a remote island group.

SIM Card Registration Regulations in the Faroe Islands

Like many countries in Northern Europe, the Nordic countries, and Europe in general, you do not have to register yourself when buying a SIM card in the Faroe Islands.

A special reminder for those from the EU/EEA: The Faroe Islands is not part of the EU or EEA, which means that the Roam Like at Home rule does not apply in the Faroe Islands. Therefore, it is recommended that European citizens with EU SIM cards buy a Faroese SIM card instead of roaming with their providers. Some providers, however, offer free roaming in the Faroe Islands, but this is not the case for all. Be sure to check your provider’s site to learn whether you can roam for free or not.

Do note that the Faroe Islands have a currency called Faroese Króna (FOK). However, the Danish Kroner (DKK) seems to be used more than FOK. Luckily, FOK is pegged 1:1 with DKK, meaning that 1 FOK is 1 DKK. All establishments accept DKK in the Faroe Island.

With that being said, let’s see what Ver and Hey have to offer to us.

Ver by Føroya Tele

Føroya Tele has a mobile brand called Ver. The company itself is state-owned. With the best coverage throughout Iceland, Ver is popular in the country. However, they are the more expensive option in the Faroe Islands.

SIM Card Price – Føroya Tele

You can get a Ver SIM card for 97 DKK at Vágar Airport. It comes with 2 GB and 25 DKK credit. This SIM card can, however, be classified as a tourist SIM card. Ver does sell other types of SIM cards in the following denominations:

You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Faroe Islands, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Føroya Tele.

Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported European countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).

The regular SIM cards can be purchased in Ver stores, supermarkets, gas stations, and online. Do note that these SIM cards require you to be a customer for at least 2 months. Double the listed prices from above, and you get the price you have to pay.

For an additional 100 DKK, you can use your allowance in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Russia, Indonesia, Israel, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States. Moreover, you can also call and text to these countries while in Iceland with this add-on.

You can also get data add-ons for when you are out of data online for local use. The following 3 monthly data add-ons are available:

• 50 DKK: 2 GB 
• 100 DKK: 5 GB
• 130 DKK: 10 GB

Hey by Vodafone Faroe

Vodafone Faroe, just Vodafone, has a mobile brand called Hey. Their coverage is “worse” than the one of Ver, but Hey is cheaper than Ver and can be a good option for those staying in populated areas.

SIM Card Price – Hey

Hey SIM cards are sold for 229 DKK and come with 5 GB and 250 DKK in credit.

You may want to get a travel eSIM for the Faroe Islands, which can be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Hey (in some cases).

Especially when getting a Europe-wide eSIM if you do not stay in just the Faroe Islands or a global eSIM valid for up to a year if you want one eSIM to work practically worldwide.
