SIM Cards in Trinidad & Tobago: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Trinidad and Tobago – one of the oldest hydrocarbon producers in the world.

The country is also known for its carnivals.

Additionally, the nation is home to beautiful islands, such as Maracas Beach.

If you are into bays, head to Englishmans Bay.

Like birds? The Caroni Bird Sanctuary is stunning.

Of course, you can also snorkel and scuba dive almost anywhere around the two islands.

Not into water-related activities? The National Museum & Art Gallery is a must-see.

Let's not forget about the Siewdass Sadhu Shiva Mandir Temple in the Sea.

Overall, there is no reason to be bored when in Trinidad and Tobago.

Whether you want to share your beach-life photos or remarkable pictures of bays online with your friends or family, you should know that international roaming can be expensive.

The best way to save a lot of money on phone usage is by using local SIM cards, like one from Trinidad and Tobago. That way, you can enjoy local rates.

Are SIM cards cheap in Trinidad and Tobago? Not really.

You can get a Trinidadian SIM card for 49 TTD (7.25 USD) from Digicel or for between 50 TTD (7.40 USD) to 200 TTD (29.50 USD) from Bmobile or resellers. They are also sold at Piarco International Airport (POS) but not at Crown Point-A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB).

Although the SIM card prices are standard, an unlimited data package for 3 USD is close to unheard of.

And it can be found in Trinidad and Tobago.

But of course, there are strings attached to such an offer.

And there are many things you should know about SIM cards in Trinidad and Tobago. So…

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Trinidad and Tobago. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Trinidad and Tobago?

You can buy a Trinidadian and Tobagonian SIM card from Digicel or Bmobile as a tourist. There is nothing preventing travelers from buying a SIM card in Trinidad and Tobago.

You do have to comply with the SIM card registration regulations.

Moreover, your phone has to support the frequencies used in Trinidad and Tobago.

Furthermore, your phone needs to be unlocked (SIM-lock free) to use a Trinidadian and Tobagonian SIM card.

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Trinidad and Tobago?

You can get a Grenadian SIM card in the official stores of Digicel and Bmobile and from resellers. They are also available Piarco International Airport (POS) but not at Crown Point-A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB).

You can expect to pay the following for Trinidadian and Tobagonian SIM cards:

  • Digicel Trinidad and Tobago: 49 TTD
  • Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago: 50 TTD, 100 TTD, 150 TTD & 200 TTD (four starter packs)

The following mobile operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:

  • Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago: 210 TTD, 225 TTD & 350 TTD

Can You Use Your Phone in Trinidad and Tobago?

Trinidad and Tobago use GSM technology for mobile communications primarily. CDMA phones will not work in Trinidad and Tobago. However, almost all phones use GSM anyway.

You also need to be aware of the ITU Regions to determine whether your phone will work in other parts of the world.

Although there are three ITU Regions, you only need to know these two terms: American frequencies and European frequencies.

Trinidad and Tobago use American frequencies, which are used in the Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2).

Phones sold in the Americas typically have no issues when using their phone in other ITU Region 2 countries.

In Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania (ITU Regions 1 & 3), they typically use European frequencies, meaning phones bought in those regions can be used in countries using European frequencies without issues.

ITU Regions Map by Phone Travel Wiz

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Trinidad and Tobago.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 & 3) and have a low/medium-end device without Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Trinidad and Tobago or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).

If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Trinidad and Tobago (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Trinidad and Tobago

Cellular Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

Trinidad and Tobago have two mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:

  • Digicel Trinidad and Tobago
  • Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago

The following frequencies are used in Trinidad and Tobago:

  • 2G: 850 MHz
  • 3G: 850 MHz & 1900 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28), 1700/2100 MHz (Band 4 – AWS) & 1900 MHz (Band 2)
  • 5G NR: 2500 MHz (n41)

You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.

To check whether your phone will work in Trinidad and Tobago, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).

Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).

If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

VoLTE & VoWiFi in Trinidad and Tobago

Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFI calling) are not offered by the mobile operators in Trinidad and Tobago (yet).

This means that when you make a call, your phone will downgrade to 3G (or 2G when 3G is not available) instead of staying connected to 4G/LTE.

This is also why you often cannot use mobile while calling if not connected to WiFi.

VoWiFi is, as the name implies, calling on a WiFi connection as opposed to on a cellular network.

5G NR in Trinidad and Tobago

5G NR Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

Commercial 5G NR is available in Trinidad and Tobago as of 2022. However, it is currently only used for mobile broadband for home use.

Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago launched 5G NR in late 2019.

It is unknown when Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago and Digicel Trinidad and Tobago will get the proper licenses for mobile 5G NR use.

Best SIM Card in Trinidad and Tobago

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Trinidad and Tobago, I recommend going with Digicel. Its 4G/LTE coverage is almost nationwide, whereas Bmobile's 4G/LTE reception is limited. Moreover, Digicel has the fastest speeds. Do consider Bmobile for unlimited data plans at slower speeds.

Best eSIM in Trinidad and Tobago

Unfortunately, none of the mobile operators offer eSIM (to prepaid customers) in Trinidad and Tobago yet.

Note that the Trinidadian mobile operators require your identification (passport) for (future) eSIMs and physical SIM cards.

However, you can also get a travel eSIM from various eSIM providers.

The list below is not exhaustive – many more providers have eSIMs for Trinidad and Tobago.

But these are the ones I have tried and had pleasant experiences with.

Moreover, they are reasonably priced, which I find very important (you will not see me recommending an eSIM I would not buy myself).

So here are the four best eSIMs for Trinidad and Tobago:

Because this is the SIM card buying guide for Trinidad and Tobago, I will not spend too much time about travel eSIMs here and throughout this guide (but I will still do here and there).

If you want to learn more about the best eSIMs for Trinidad and Tobago, you better check out my Trinidad & Tobago eSIM buying guide.

It is as helpful and comprehensive as this guide but about eSIMs instead 😜.

SIM card registration with your passport information is mandatory in Trinidad and Tobago. It will be done at the point of purchase.

Trinidad and Tobago Mobile Speeds, Mobile Internet Prices & Insights

Trinidad and Tobago Flag

Mobile data used to be crazy expensive in the Caribbean. Nowadays, the average cost of data has gone down by a lot.

Trinidad and Tobago were somewhat exempt from this generalization. Its mobile data rates were reasonable.

So, how much does mobile data cost in Trinidad and Tobago?

The average price for 1 GB of data in Trinidad and Tobago is 1.90 USDbelow the Caribbean average of 4.44 USD. The world average is 4.07 USD.

This places Trinidad and Tobago on spot 5 of the Caribbean nations with the lowest average cost for 1 GB of data.

So what about speeds? Will you get fast speeds for these low prices or slow speeds in Trinidad and Tobago?

The country has the fastest mobile download speeds in the Caribbean.

Trinidad and Tobago's median mobile download speed is around 32 Mbps.

Currently, Jamaica is trailing behind with a median mobile download speed of 31 Mbps.

So perhaps Jamaica will overtake Trinidad and Tobago if the mobile operators (finally) decide on improving speeds because they have been stagnant for over a year.

In the Caribbean, you can expect your speeds to range between 10 Mbps and 25 Mbps.

In Trinidad and Tobago, you will be on the higher end and even higher.

At least, with Digicel Trinidad and Tobago. Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago is much slower.

Here are some test results of the 2020 Speedtest Award Report for Trinidad and Tobago.

As you can see, Digicel Trinidad and Tobago is leading with an average mobile download speed of more than 2.5 times faster than Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago.

And these are some old results – and Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago has not improved much since then.

Overall, you should have a smooth network experience in Trinidad and Tobago.

With average SIM card prices, extensive nationwide coverage, decent mobile download speeds, and low mobile data rates, you should have a smooth network experience in Trinidad and Tobago.

Currency in Trinidad and Tobago

50 Trinidad and Tobago Dollar Note

Trinidad and Tobago use the Trinidad & Tobago Dollar with the symbol TTD (which will be used throughout this guide).

However, prices are often listed as just TT, $, or TT$. For example, 25 TTD = $/TT/TT$25.

For reference, below are some exchange rates between TTD and USD (US Dollars):

  • 1 TTD = 0.15 USD
  • 10 TTD = 1.50 USD
  • 100 TTD = 14.75 USD
  • 1000 TTD = 147.60 USD

For up-to-date TTD:USD exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.

If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.

Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).

Digicel has no eSIMs.

You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Trinidad & Tobago, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Digicel.

Especially if you get a Latin (Central- and South) America-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported Latin American countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).

In my Trinidad & Tobago eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.

But I will introduce them here quickly:

  • Airalo: Tritocom (Trinidad & Tobago only), – use code APR15 (15% off – first-time users only) or APR10 (10% off)
  • Alosim: Trinidad & Tobago – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
  • Holafly: Trinidad & Tobago – all variants in both options include unlimited data – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
  • Nomad: Trinidad & Tobago – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)

Once again, check out my Trinidad & Tobago eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.

For now, I will continue with Digicel.

Digicel used to sell tourist SIM cards for 202.50 TTD or 30 USD with 3 GB of data, unlimited WhatsApp data & 200 local/international (select destinations only) minutes – all valid for 30 days.

This SIM card, or plan, was available at Piarco International Airport and selected in Digicel stores.

It looks like they discontinued this product somewhere in 2020.

However, Digicel has discontinued this offer multiple times, only to reintroduce it later – this may happen again soon.

Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago

Bmobile Trinidad and Tobago, just Bmobile and not to be confused with Bmobile in Papua New Guinea, is one of the two mobile operators in Trinidad and Tobago.

It used to be the sole mobile operator until Digicel entered the scene.

Since then, it lost its number 1 spot in terms of customers, speeds & coverage.

That is what you sometimes get when a company is owned by the government (51% by the government, 49% by Cable and Wireless… but not for long).

Bmobile uses the following frequencies:

  • 2G: 850 MHz
  • 3G: 850 MHz & 1900 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28) & 1900 MHz (Band 2)

The Preferred Way to Stay Connected When Traveling in Trinidad and Tobago

Getting a SIM card from Digicel would do you well when considering a Trinidadian and Tobagonian SIM card.
